DSM has an active sustainability program called Treading Gently, which includes a clear vision, straightforward approach, partnerships with green building consultants, and a well-designed roadmap. We adhere to a series of targets, levels and strategies, comprising 10 key pillars:
1] Land Use & Wildlife
Protecting and restoring biodiversity and creating new natural habitats through proper land use and integration into the built environment; leading to biological diversity, land and wildlife protection and respect of nature.
2] Sustainable & Healthy Materials
Using products that are healthy and either sourced locally, salvaged, recycled or made from renewable materials; leading to healthier indoor environments, low embodied energy and biodiversity.
3] Zero Carbon & Low Energy Use
Making buildings as energy efficient as possible and deliver a good proportion of the energy from renewable technologies; leading to mitigation of climate change and the promotion of renewable and clean energy.
4] Sustainable Water
Using water efficiently in buildings and in farming, to avoid local issues such as flooding, drought and water course pollution; leading to natural water sources protection, potable water preservation and land protection.
5] Zero Waste
Reducing waste generation throughout the building’s life cycle from design and construction through operation and end of life; leading to reduced pollution emissions, reduced energy and water use, better resource management and the promoting of a recycling market.
6] Local Economy
Encouraging local employment, fair trade and supply, along with supporting regional cooperatives and the cottage industry; leading to CO2 emissions reduction, elevating people’s education and skills, providing employment for local communities and promoting local businesses.

7] Sustainable Transport
Reduce carbon dioxide emissions from transportation by encouraging the use of fuel efficient and alternative fuel modes of transport, as well as connecting the site to existing transportation systems; leading to a reduction in carbon emissions, the promotion of alternative energies and enhancement of human health through physical activity.
8] Local & Sustainable Food
Supporting and encouraging sustainable and humane farming, promoting access to healthy, low impact, local, seasonal and organic foods and reducing food waste; leading to local employment, reduced health problems, respect for seasons and nature and reduced waste.
9] Culture & Community
Respecting and reviving local identity, wisdom and culture, encouraging staff to shape their community and create a new culture of sustainability; leading to diversity, the involvement of local people, and respect for identity and heritage.
10] Health & Happiness
Promoting good health and well-being and encouraging active, fulfilling lives; leading to social connection, creativity development, self-awareness, self-development, self-expression, personal growth and thermal and visual comfort.
